Grayslake Central students collect 25 tons of food

Students from Grayslake Central's Student Council and Public Service Practicum classes collected more than 50,000 pounds for the school's 23rd annual food drive.

The collected food will go to the Avon Township Food Pantry and provide holiday meals to more than 200 local area families. Meals will include a frozen turkey, potatoes, apples, milk and multiple boxes of nonperishable goods.

This event is a culmination of many weeks of work by the students and the efforts of numerous community groups. The process began Nov. 15, when students delivered bags to every house in the community. Students then picked up the bags Nov. 22.

In addition, the students have been coordinating an in-school food drive since Nov. 25. The success of this year's food drive would not be possible without the generosity of all the community members who made donations.

Public Service Practicum teacher Dustin Chierico has high praise for the Grayslake Central Students.

"This year's students showed great resolve to this fantastic cause by venturing out into the snowstorm to collect canned food for their community. We are very proud of how committed they are to a cause greater than themselves."

Community members can still donate by visiting the GCHS Student Council's GoFundMe page at www.gofundme.com/yeswecan15.
