Two could be booted from DuPage primary ballot

Two candidates could be kicked off DuPage County's March primary ballot if residents opposing their candidacies can prove mistakes were made on their nominating papers.

Opponents claim petitions filed by Moon Khan and John Allen don't have enough valid signatures to qualify for spots in the March 15 election.

Khan, a Democrat from Lombard who previously ran for office as a Republican, wants to win his party's nomination to face Recorder Fred Bucholz during the November general election.

Khan could not immediately be reached for comment.

Allen, of Wheaton, entered the Republican primary in a bid to become the GOP nominee for a District 4 county board seat. The district includes all or parts of Addison, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights, Lisle, Lombard, Wheaton and Winfield.

Allen said Tuesday he was unaware his nominating petitions had been challenged, but indicated he believes he has enough valid signatures to remain on the ballot.

The county's electoral board will review the objections and decide whether the candidates' nomination papers are valid. An initial hearing is scheduled for Monday at the DuPage County Election Commission office in Wheaton.

As a Democrat, Khan needs at least 844 valid signatures to appear on the March ballot as a recorder candidate.

But Tim Zoellner of Lombard insists that more than 2,000 of the 2,898 signatures Khan collected are invalid. Zoellner claims he found multiple problems, including invalid signatures, names of people who aren't registered DuPage voters and names of people not registered to the address listed.

Allen, meanwhile, needs at least 145 valid signatures to appear on the ballot as a county board candidate for District 4. He hopes to face Glen Ellyn Trustee Timothy Elliott and attorney Michelle Moore during the Republican primary.

The winner of the GOP primary in District 4 is expected to face Democrat Khizar Jafri of Wheaton.

But Salvatore Falbo of Glen Ellyn claims that many of the 200 signatures on Allen's petition aren't valid. He said individuals who signed the document aren't duly qualified, registered and legal voters of District 4.
