Broadway hit 'Hamilton' coming to Chicago in September

"Hamilton," the hit hip-hop musical by composer/lyricist/writer Lin-Manuel Miranda, will launch its national tour in Chicago in September.

The musical arrives on Sept. 27 at Broadway in Chicago's newly renamed PrivateBank Theatre, formerly the Bank of America Theatre, producer Jeffrey Seller announced Tuesday.

Inspired by Ron Chernow's 2004 biography "Alexander Hamilton," Miranda's bio-musical about the nation's first treasury secretary and his fellow Founding Fathers features a score that combines hip-hop, pop, blues and jazz and a diverse cast of young singer/actors.

The show opened on Broadway in August to near universal acclaim, and its original cast recording was recently nominated for a 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.

The creative team includes director Thomas Kail, choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler and musical director Alex Lacamoire, all of whom collaborated with Miranda on the Tony Award-winning "In The Heights."

Tuesday's announcement also included a reference to the new partnership between Broadway in Chicago and PrivateBank that includes the renaming of the former Bank of America Theatre at 18 W. Madison St., Chicago. The name change will take effect Feb. 9 with the opening of "Cabaret."
