DOD reclaims armored vehicle from southern Indiana county

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Defense has reclaimed an armored vehicle it had given to the Clark County Sheriff's Office in southern Indiana.

The sheriff's office acquired the vehicle in October 2014 at no cost through a program that provided surplus military equipment to state and local police agencies. Sheriff Jamey Noel said sheriff's officers were trained on the vehicle and the office spent about $3,000 on standard maintenance.

Noel told the News and Tribune (http://bit.ly/1Nxrv9r ) that he received notice on Oct. 1 that the Department of Defense would repossess the vehicle. President Barack Obama said earlier this year that the use of militarized gear by police can give the public the feeling that law enforcement is like "an occupying force."
