Carbon monoxide sends 23 Indiana factory workers to hospital

MIDDLEBURY, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say most of the nearly two dozen workers at a northern Indiana factory hospitalized with possible carbon monoxide poisoning at a northern Indiana recreational vehicle plant have been released.

A spokeswoman for Elkhart General Hospital said all but one of the 23 people transported to the hospital had been released by Monday afternoon. Emergency crews were called about 7 a.m. Monday to a Forest River recreational vehicle plant in Middlebury after workers started feeling ill.

Middlebury Fire Chief Jeff Wogman says a furnace exhaust system had rusted through, causing fumes to go directly into the building. He says many workers were suffering from headaches, nausea and other symptoms.

About 140 people were working in the plant miles east of South Bend when it was evacuated.
