Forest preserve shows 'dump' mentality
Why would the Lake County Forest Preserve spend a $10 million small fortune for 337 acres of farmland bereft of all natural resources?
Farm fields retain the absolute lowest possible amount of natural beauty and value. Any volunteer steward will tell you that frogs, birds, or trees in soil that has lost its structure and is full of chemicals are few and far between.
The Nature Conservancy in very sharp contrast to our Forest Preserve strives to buy and protect native landscapes that are relatively less disturbed and retain their natural values, remnants.
Farm fields drain fiscal and natural resources from other sites. This purchase is akin to a car collector buying an old El Camino without tires or engine.
Natural areas management isn't cheap and the forest preserve has plenty of areas of much higher natural value that are lying neglected and decaying. Imagine that car collector adding the El Camino to his fleet of 30 cars but only 10 garages.
You end up with a dump.
