Byron announcement good news for energy, economy
Illinois citizens who want to continue reaping the benefits of affordable, clean and safe nuclear energy received good news recently, with the announcement that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has renewed the Byron Nuclear Generating Station's license.
This means 20 additional years of clean energy, while at the same time sustaining good jobs and economic benefits for both Ogle County and the state.
Notably, the two reactors at Byron, apart from generating affordable electricity, provide nearly $56 million in state and local taxes, and much of that supports Ogle County area schools. Furthermore, the facility employs hundreds of people directly and is estimated to indirectly support 5,144 jobs in the area, resulting in $1.73 million economic output for the state.
The announcement will mean that for the next 20 years, Byron will continue its contribution to the economy and the environment, powering millions of homes each day. The renewal of the facility's license represents a critical understanding of the value of nuclear energy in helping Illinois and our nation meet emissions reduction goals and combat climate change, and I commend the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's decision.
