Des Plaines welcomes Santa, holiday season

Des Plaines held its Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony Friday in Metropolitan Square.

The event featured hand-decorated Christmas trees, Santa Claus and his elves, live entertainment, and special guest appearances by the characters of "Frozen."

The event began about 4 p.m. with students and organizations decorating holiday trees provided by the Des Plaines Optimist Club. Santa helped Mayor Matt Bogusz announce poster contest winners and, later in the evening, elected officials led the countdown to light up Des Plaines for the season.
