Congressman says he won't vote for Alvarez in next election

CHICAGO (AP) - Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez says he will not vote for Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez when she seeks re-election next year.

In a letter obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times (http://bit.ly/1YGiBP9), Gutierrez cited the "inexcusable" delay in bringing charges against Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke in the shooting death of Laquan McDonald.

There has been a growing chorus demanding Alvarez's resignation over her handling of the McDonald case. In an appearance Tuesday on WTTW-TV's Chicago Tonight, Alvarez said she won't resign.

Gutierrez wrote in his letter to Alvarez he promised last summer to back her. He said after personal anguish and soul searching, he "can no longer keep that pledge."

Gutierrez wrote Laquan McDonald deserved justice not last week but thirteen months ago, adding she failed in that regard.
