Aurora man accused of school sex assault wants bail reduced

A former East Aurora High School employee charged with sexual assault of a student wants his bail reduced, arguing he is not a flight risk nor a danger to the community, in part because he has a family and home in Aurora and is an officer in the National Guard.

Jose B. Corona, 31, of the 1300 block of South Glen Court, Aurora, has been held at the Kane County jail on $100,000 bail since his Nov. 13 arrest, meaning he must post $10,000 to be released while the case is pending.

Corona, who worked for 10 weeks at the high school as a truancy liaison, has been charged with six counts of criminal sexual assault of a 17-year-old student from incidents in August and one count of battery in connection to contact with a second student, according to authorities.

In court papers, Corona's defense attorney argues he is a lifelong Aurora resident who is married with two children.

Corona has been a National Guard officer the past 2½ years of his 4½ years of service, and has applied for positions at Aurora Police and the Kane County Sheriff's departments.

"Defendant is a family man who spends time with his parents daily and sees his sister several times a month as she still spends most of her time in her apartment near DePaul (University) where she resided for college," read part of Corona's court motion. "The defendant has never had any prior instance of a police encounter whatsoever."

Corona was a noncertified staff member who worked with students who were in danger of becoming chronically truant, officials said. He worked at the high school Aug. 27 through Nov. 12, when he resigned after the allegations surfaced.

Corona is next due in court Tuesday.

If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison and must register as a sex offender.
