Elgin routs Holy Trinity
Apparently, for the Elgin boys basketball team some things are worth wait.
The Maroons' opening game was delayed nearly 40 minutes because their opponent Holy Trinity got stuck in traffic. But like a horse that was stuck at the starting line too long the Matroons couldn't wait to get started as they exploded out of the gate for 37 points en route to a 85-56 win in opening round action at the West Chicago Turkey Classic.
Desmond Douglas led the Maroons charge with 20 points In all the Maroons had 4 players in double digits with Reggie Cole adding 14 points, Courtese Cooper 13, Lavion Baldwin 11.
"We definitely have some guys who can score," Elgin coach Mike Sitter said. " We have a lot more options this year. Desmond can beat just about any one off the dribble and that breaks down the defense. He finished at the rim and can kick it out to shooters. And like I said we have some guys who can shoot.
The Maroons made 10 of their first 12 shots and knocked down six three pointers in the first quarter to build a 37-16 lead.
Cooper started the Maroons scoring with a thunderous slam in transition in the opening minutes. Douglas had 10 points in the first quarter on 2 driving layups and 6 free throws. Baldwin knocked down three 3 pointer.
The Maroons slowed down a bit after their torrid start, but never remotely let Trinity back in the contest. The Maroons led 56-26 at the break and by as many as 38 points in the second half. Cole paced the Maroons in the second half with 9 points
