Inter moves clear at top of Serie A on low-key day in Europe

MILAN (AP) - Inter Milan moved two points clear at the top of Serie A with a 4-0 win over struggling Frosinone in an otherwise subdued Sunday for Europe's major leagues.

Inter was the only leader of Europe's top leagues in action. The rest played on Saturday with Champions League matches ahead next week.

In Spain, Atletico Madrid took advantage of Real Madrid's humbling loss in the "clasico" by moving past its crosstown rivals into second place after winning 1-0 at Real Betis.

There was only one game in the English Premier League, where Tottenham brushed aside London rival West Ham in a convincing 4-1 victory, courtesy of two goals from England striker Harry Kane.

Fans and players alike paid their respects following last week's deadly attacks in Paris, where 130 people died and hundreds more were injured. There was also increased security at stadiums across Europe.

ITALY

Inter striker Jonathan Biabiany marked his first start in more than a year with a goal, after spending last season sidelined with a heart problem which almost forced the Frenchman to retire.

Biabiany set Inter on the way to its first win by more than a one-goal margin since April. Mauro Icardi, Jeison Murillo and Marcelo Brozovic also scored.

Inter moved two points clear of Fiorentina, which came back from two goals down to rescue a 2-2 draw at home to Empoli thanks to a second-half double from substitute Nikola Kalinic.

Napoli moved into second, above Fiorentina on goal difference, after a 2-0 win at relegation-threatened Hellas Verona. Gonzalo Higuain netted his 10th league goal of the season and was set up by Lorenzo Insigne, who also scored the opener.

Sassuolo remained fifth, despite losing 2-1 at Genoa in a match that saw both sides reduced to 10 men at the end of the first half.

Elsewhere, Vincenzo Montella's first match as Sampdoria coach ended in defeat as his new team lost 1-0 at Udinese, while Lazio ended a run of three successive defeats by coming from behind to draw 1-1 against Palermo.

Carpi remained level with bottom club Verona after losing 2-1 at home to Chievo Verona and Torino won 1-0 at Atalanta.

SPAIN

Atletico replaced Madrid as Barcelona's closest title rival at four points off its pace through 12 rounds.

Jorge "Koke" Resurreccion blasted in a rebound for what proved to be the winner in the seventh minute after Atletico's intense pressure recovered the ball. After that, the hosts were outmatched and never mustered a serious challenge, while Atletico squandered several more chances.

Elsewhere, Villarreal scored late to salvage a 1-1 draw at home with Eibar that lifted it into fourth place.

In a match that both teams finished with 10 men, left back Jaume Costa received Denis Suarez's through-ball and poked home Villarreal's equalizer off the post with five minutes left.

At the other end of the standings, Brazilian striker Deyverson scored twice in Levante's 3-0 win at Sporting Gijon to move the team off the bottom of table with its first win in three matches under new coach Joan Ferrer.

Granada also got a much-needed first home win of the season, and its first victory in 10 rounds, to emerge from the relegation zone after downing Athletic Bilbao 2-0.

FRANCE

Grieving for the loss of his cousin, midfielder Lassana Diarra joined in with an emotional rendition of the national anthem before his Marseille side faced Saint-Etienne in the French league.

Marseille won the match 2-0.

The matches themselves had little resonance, but Caen moved back up to third place after drawing 0-0 against Angers, which sits in fifth place and Saint-Etienne is in seventh spot. All are way behind runaway leader Paris Saint-Germain, which played Saturday.

Gazelec Ajaacio won 2-1 at Bastia in the Corsican derby, while Rennes striker Giovanni Sio's stoppage-time spot kick was saved in a 2-2 draw against Bordeaux.

GERMANY

An own goal was enough for Hertha Berlin to reclaim fourth place in the Bundesliga with a 1-0 home win over Hoffenheim that left the visiting side bottom.

Hertha scored on the half-hour mark when Eugen Polanski's attempted clearance from Marvin Plattenhardt's free kick ended up going in off the post. The goal-line technology confirmed that the ball had crossed before Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann scooped it away.

Elsewhere, Ingolstadt came from behind to defeat fellow promoted side Darmstadt 3-1 and climb to eighth.
