German football chiefs agree on candidate for president

HANNOVER, Germany (AP) - Germany's regional soccer chiefs have agreed Reinhard Grindel will be their candidate for president of the national football federation, which has been rocked by corruption and tax evasion allegations.

Grindel, until now the federation's treasurer, will have to be confirmed at a special assembly. No other candidates have come forward. Regional associations have a majority in the national federation (DFB).

Wolfgang Niersbach resigned last week as DFB president after new allegations of corruption in connection with the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Niersbach and two other former officials are also the target of a tax evasion probe over a suspicious payment to FIFA.

Niersbach has denied any wrongdoing and has insisted no votes were bought ahead of Germany's successful bid for the 2006 tournament.
