Tippecanoe sheriff's officials warn of phone scam

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - The Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department is warning residents of a phone scam.

The office released a statement Saturday saying one or more people have made calls claiming they are sheriff's deputies with the agency's "warrants and citations division." The callers claim there is a warrant for the person's arrest for failure to appear in court or for jury selection.

To settle the matter, the caller says the person must obtain a prepaid card or make other payment for money "owed" because of the warrant.

Officials say the callers are not associated with the sheriff's department and law enforcement officials would never make phone contact to collect money in this manner. They say callers should not give any personal information or return messages.
