Church Welcomes the LGBT Community with Special Events

Congregational United Church of Christ (CUCC, 1001 W. Kirchoff Rd., Arlington Heights) embraces diversity with a trio of November events honoring the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community.

On Sunday, November 8, CUCC collaborated with six other suburban churches (Church of the Incarnation United Methodist; First Presbyterian Church; First United Methodist Church; Holy Family Roman Catholic Church; St. John United Church of Christ; and St. Simon's Episcopal Church) to bring the About Face Theatre group to Arlington Heights. Through innovative and award-winning plays, About Face furthers national conversations about gender and sexual identity. The Arlington Heights show-"It's For Real"-illuminated the complexities of race, class, sexuality, age, gender, self-esteem and family dynamics through humorous and thought-provoking vignettes.

CUCC continues its support of the LGBT community with Moments of Witness in two upcoming services. On Sunday, November 22, the 10:30 a.m. service will commemorate Transgender Day of Remembrance by paying tribute to transgender lives and the victims of anti-transgender violence. At the 10:30 a.m. worship on Sunday, November 29, the church will observe World AIDS Day with a special prayer recognizing all those affected by HIV.

"[W]e begin every service of worship [at CUCC] with these words: 'No matter who you are, or where you may be on life's journey, you are welcome here!'"explains Reverend Dr. Rex Piercy. "We want the larger community to know that these things matter to God and to us as a people of faith."
