Bronze statue planned for 1940s Anderson hoops star Wilson
ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) - The star of Anderson High School's 1946 state championship basketball team is being honored with a 9-foot tall bronze statue that will be placed at the school's main entrance.
The Anderson Community Schools board voted Tuesday night to approve the site for the statue of Johnny Wilson. The Herald Bulletin reports (http://bit.ly/1GWZ2NR ) the statue's model shows the Indiana Mr. Basketball winner wearing a Harlem Globetrotters uniform with his arm and basketball extended toward the sky.
Statue project organizer Primus Mootry says the statue will remind students about Wilson for years to come.
Major colleges didn't recruit Wilson because he was black. He starred at Anderson College and later played professional baseball in the Negro League and pro basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters.
Donations are paying for the statue.
