Titans qualify for NCAA soccer, men's program to be cut
OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) - The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh men's soccer team has learned it has qualified for the NCAA tournament. But, that won't be enough to save the soccer program.
The Titans will play in the Division 3 tournament Saturday. Team members say they fought hard this year and made it to the tournament with an 11-3-3 record. Junior Jacob Hernandez tells WLUK-TV (http://bit.ly/1MUg0yF ) they played each game for each other and for the alumni and previous players.
Assistant Vice Chancellor Jamie Ceman says the university is dealing with some significant budget issues - that's why men's tennis and men's soccer had to be cut. Ceman says it was based on whether the teams were part of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The WIAC no longer recognizes men's soccer because there aren't enough schools in the conference with teams.
