Melodie Gliniewicz and D.J. Gliniewicz are now part of the criminal investigation that stems from what authorities have said was Fox Lake police Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz's illegal use of funds taken over seven years from the Fox Lake Law Enforcement Explorer Post 300 account, said a source close to the investigation. The stolen money was used for travel, mortgage payments, personal gym memberships, adult websites, personal loans and cash withdrawals. Gliniewicz committed the "ultimate betrayal" in a carefully staged suicide made to look like a crime scene that resulted in a hero's burial in early September, officials said this week. Full story.

Aurora rapist jailed for failing to resister with police:

A convicted rapist faces up to seven years in prison for his latest failure to register with police as a sex offender. Authorities arrested Danny L. Bergloff, 47, Saturday after a tip that he had moved and not notified police. He was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to a 1994 sexual assault at his Montgomery home and later sentenced to six more years in prison for failing to register as a sex offender in 2006. Happy ending to Palatine gravestone dispute:

The Archdiocese of Chicago's Catholic Cemeteries have agreed to allow an upright monument at the gravesite of a suburban Marine at St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery in Palatine. Cemetery officials not only reversed their position but agreed to install it for free after a meeting yesterday. "We are so happy," said Inverness resident Brian Guzy, whose son, Michael Scott Guzy, was buried in July. "This is the scenario I'd hoped for." Full story.

Video key to COD excessive force suit:

A former College of DuPage student has sued the Glen Ellyn-based school for damages, arguing two campus police officers used excessive force in a December 2014 arrest. Jaclyn Pazera, 27, of Willowbrook, argues she was forced to the ground and manhandled in the arrest, which was recorded on video by Pazera's teacher. "She wants people to know they can have a voice and speak out against abuse of power," her attorney said. Full story with video.

Whooping cough reported in Palatine:

At least one case of whooping cough has been reported at Palatine High School, the Cook County Department of Public Health reported yesterday. Last year, there were 81 cases reported in Cook County and parents in Palatine-Schaumburg Township High School District 211 were notified via email. Full story.

New York authorities announced Thursday they will not pursue rape charges against Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane. "There is no winner here and we will never know precisely what occurred. Kane has suffered and so has the accuser. Neither will ever be the same," writes Barry Rozner. "They will try to recover and move on with their lives, and they will have to do it publicly and with complete scrutiny." Full column.
