Gary girl, 3, killed when she runs into street, hit by truck
GARY, Ind. (AP) - Police say a 3-year-old Gary girl has died from injuries she suffered when she ran into traffic and was struck by a pickup truck.
DaVea L. Smith was holding the hand of a 12-year-old relative Tuesday as they walked to a nearby store when police say she broke away from that boy and ran into adjacent street traffic.
The Lake County coroner's office says DaVea was pronounced dead at a hospital form blunt force trauma after being struck by a pickup truck.
Witness Eddie Epps told police the two children were walking through a liquor store's parking lot when the girl "snatched her hand away and ran into the street."
The (Merrillville) Post-Tribune reports (http://trib.in/1iDhdfQ ) the truck's driver has not been charged.
