Veterans Day events in Lake County
Veterans Day is Wednesday, Nov. 11. Here are some of the events planned in Lake County this year to commemorate the men and women who have served the United States of America.
College of Lake County: The annual Veterans Day Ceremony is at noon, Friday, Nov. 6 in Room C005 (C Wing Auditorium) at the Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St. Bernard Edelman, of Lincolnshire, a 97-year-old World War II veteran and former prisoner of war, will be the keynote speaker. In addition, a Veteran Resource Fair and Welcome Home Celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the lower level C Wing to highlight information on veteran benefits and services. The events are being sponsored by CLC and Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center. The ceremony honors those who have served in the U.S. military and will feature U.S. Navy and CLC speakers, a color guard and buglers. A luncheon will be served in Room C003 after the ceremony. Visitor parking is available in staff parking Lot 7, south of the science building construction area. Enter at the C Wing temporary door. Deerfield: A ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Deerfield Veterans Memorial, Jewett Park Drive and Park Avenue, Deerfield. Deerfield Post 738 American Legion will meet at the Legion Post, 849 Waukegan Road Deerfield, at 10:15 a.m. and walk to the Veteran's Memorial for a ceremony at 11 a.m. Visit deerfieldpost738.org.
Fox Lake: Fox Lake American Legion Post 703 will host a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov 11, at the Fox Lake Veterans Memorial at the Fox Lake Metra Station, Nippersink Drive and Grand Avenue. Call (847) 587-2323.
Highland Park: The event will be from 11-11:45 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Highland Park Public Library, 494 Laurel Ave., Highland Park. The Highland Park High School Brass Quartet will perform. Representatives from American Legion Post 145, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4737 and Jewish War Veterans 29 will be on hand. Lloyd S. LeVine will be recognized as a "Hero Among Us." Special guest speakers will include state Sen. Julie Morrison, State Representative Scott Drury, Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering and more. Visit www.cityhpil.com.

Lake Forest: Lake Forest American Legion McKinlock Post 264 will hold a Veterans Day ceremony from 9:30-11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Lake Forest High School, 1285 N. McKinley Road, Lake Forest. The ceremony will feature the Lake Forest High School Band, the Post 264 Color Guard will present the colors, and Post member Jerry Thompson will recognize the Veterans Day essay contest winners.
Lindenhurst: Veterans Day ceremonies will take place Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m., at the Lindenhurst Veterans Memorial at the entrance to Lindenhurst village hall, 2301 E. Sand Lake Road. In the event of inclement weather the ceremony will be held in the public works building behind village hall. The keynote speaker is Maj. Christopher Hillmann, commander 361st Tactical Psychological Operations Battalion, U.S. Army Reserve. Paula Carballido, director of Lake County Honor Flight, and Julie Tevenan, coordinator of The U.S. Department of Urban Development Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program at the Captain James A Lovell Federal Health Care Center will be available to provide information on their programs. Lindenhurst Police Explorers Scouts will provide the color guard. Music and taps will be provided by Lakes Community High School Wind Ensemble, and Officer Rebecca Labb will be the featured vocalist. A three-volley salute will be conducted by Lake County Detachment 801 of the Marine Corps League.
Waukegan: The Waukegan Veterans Day Parade will step off at the corner of Genesee Street and Grand Avenue at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 11. A ceremony will be held at 11:11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Plaza at Washington and West streets.
