A look at selected mayoral races across Indiana:
- Indianapolis: Former U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett is the Democratic candidate, facing Republican candidate Chuck Brewer, a restaurant owner. The winner will succeed two-term Republican Mayor Greg Ballard, isn't seeking re-election.
- Fort Wayne: Democratic Mayor Tom Henry is challenged by Republican Mitch Harper, who is a City Council member and former state legislator. Henry is being backed by business groups for a third term in the typically Republican-leaning city.
- Evansville: Republican Mayor Lloyd Winnecke is seeking election to a second term and faces Democratic state. Rep. Gail Riecken. Winnecke has had a large fundraising lead over Riecken in the city where Democrats usually hold a voting advantage.
- South Bend: Democratic Mayor Pete Buttigieg is seeking a second term leading the heavily Democratic city, facing voters for the first time since he came out as gay in June. He faces Republican Kelly Jones, a little-known jewelry maker.
- Carmel: Republican Mayor James Brainard, who was first elected in 1995, is unopposed for a sixth term.
- Bloomington: Democrat John Hamilton, who was a top aide to former Gov. Frank O'Bannon, is facing Republican John Turnbull, a city parks department manager, in the heavily Democratic city. Three-term Democratic Mayor Mark Kruzan isn't seeking re-election.
- Hammond: Democratic Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr., who has talked about running for the U.S. Senate in 2016, is seeking a fourth term against Republican Humberto Prado, who owns a martial arts school.
- Gary: Democratic Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, a former state attorney general, seeks a second term. She's up against Republican Charles Smith and four independent candidates.
- Terre Haute: Republican Mayor Duke Bennett is trying to win a third term against Democrat Mark Bird, a Vigo County Council member and the older brother of Basketball Hall of Famer Larry Bird. The two have clashed over Bennett's financial leadership of the city, which has a multimillion-dollar general fund deficit.
- Anderson: Republican Mayor Kevin Smith is facing Democrat Thomas Broderick Jr., a former Madison County prosecutor. Smith is on the mayoral ballot for the fourth straight election, with wins in 2003 and 2011 bookending a 2007 loss.
- Kokomo: Democrat Greg Goodnight is seeking a third term against Republican Martha Lake, the Howard County auditor.
- Elkhart: Democratic Mayor Dick Moore is seeking his third term against Republican challenger Tim Neese, a former Indiana House member.
