Police say garbage truck driver fatally injured in crash
ANGOLA, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a garbage truck driver was fatally injured when a semitrailer ran into the vehicle as it was stopped along a highway in rural northeastern Indiana.
The Steuben (stoo-BEN') County Sheriff's Department says the crash happened about 7:30 a.m. Thursday after 52-year-old Thomas Phelps of Angola had parked the truck along U.S. 20 and left it for a trash pickup.
The department says Phelps was standing alongside the truck when it was sideswiped by the semi about five miles west of Angola. Phelps was flown by helicopter to a Fort Wayne hospital, but the sheriff's department says he died during surgery.
The semi driver wasn't hurt. Alcohol use isn't a suspected factor, but the crash remains under investigation.
