Aurora churches partner to present 'Selma' movie

Aurora churches will partner to screen the Oscar-nominated movie "Selma" at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 14 N. May St. in Aurora.

The public is invited. Admission is free. The event opens with a free lunch at 1 p.m. After the film showing, small-group discussions will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

The Rev. Deborah Tinsley Taylor, pastor at Fourth Street United Methodist Church in Aurora, said her church and New Hope Lutheran Church in Aurora, teamed up to schedule the event.

Other partnering churches are Wesley UMC, Our Savior Lutheran, St. John AME, St. John UCC and Main Street Baptist.

Released in January, the film chronicles the unforgettable true story of the tumultuous three-month period in 1965 when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition.

The epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., culminated in President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement.

Director Ava DuVernay's "Selma" tells the story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.

The film stars David Oyelowo, Tom Wilkinson, Cuba Gooding Jr., Alessandro Nivola, Giovanni Ribisi Common, Carmen Ejogo, Lorraine Toussaint, with Tim Roth and Oprah Winfrey as "Annie Lee Cooper."
