Elgin Lions Club fights hunger with U-46 students

The Elgin Lions Club will welcome Noel Piatek of Northern Illinois Food Bank at their regular meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the American Legion Hall, 810 N. Liberty St., Elgin.

Piatek will explain the need for food support for families in this area. The public is invited to the meeting. Anyone who wants to attend should contact the Lions Club at their message line at (847) 289-4206. A meal will be served at the meeting to which attendees may partake for a small fee of $12.

Please state if a meal is desired when contacting the club. Advance notification of attendance is necessary to provide adequate seating and meals.

The club is conducting its annual food drive through contributions from six elementary schools in Elgin Area School District U-46. The club has set a goal of 10,000 items of food for this year. Elgin Lions Club President Ken Zehnder and Ed Bates recently addressed an assembly at Lincoln Elementary School in Hoffman Estates. The school has conducted a very successful schoolwide food drive for the last few years, and are determined to break their record of last year of 2,014 foodstuff items. Their new goal is 2,015 foodstuff items. Lincoln School also collected socks for people in homeless shelters and pennies for the March of Dimes. Other elementary schools participating in the Lions food drive are Highland, Coleman, Gifford, Hilltop and Otter Creek.

The club is always looking for new members to assist in the philanthropic efforts of the club which has been serving the community since 1921. Anyone interested should call the club number at (847) 289-4206) and leave a message indicating your interest and where you might be contacted.
