Earn cash for candy and help soldiers

This Halloween, earn cash for candy while supporting our deployed soldiers.

After all of the tricks are over and all of the sugary treats have been handed out, one area dental practice will be promoting a sugar-free smile through its annual Candy Buy Back program supporting Operation Gratitude. On Nov. 7, children of all ages can bring their excess unopened candy to McCall Family Dentistry and receive $1 per pound donated.

"Kids love the tradition of trick-or-treating and we are all guilty of loading up on excess candy this time of year. We see the damage that this added sugar can cause to a seemingly healthy smile," said Dr. Ryan McCall of McCall Family Dentistry in Geneva. "As a parent, I know it can be nearly impossible to rid your little ones of candy and more often than not, families are left with bags of candy that they were unable to hand out. We decided to participate in the Operation Gratitude Candy Buy Back program again to not only incentivize kids with cash for candy, but to educate them about preventive oral care."

Last year, McCall Family Dentistry donated more than 250 pounds of candy to Operation Gratitude and the staff is looking forward to surpassing that number this year. Global sugar consumption is steadily increasing, and parents need to pay special attention to their kids' oral hygiene, ensuring that they floss daily and brush at least twice a day for a minimum of two minutes. Monitoring sugar intake and choosing healthy sugar-free substitutes also can do wonders for pearly whites.

Candy will be collected at McCall Family Dentistry, 407 Williamsburg Ave., Geneva from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7. Each child accompanied by a parent or guardian is eligible to receive $1 per pound of unopened candy, up to five (5) pounds. Families are encouraged to separate chocolate and non-chocolate candy before arriving. Children will be able to decorate cards for service members, and each family will be entered in a raffle for an Oral B 5000 Electronic Toothbrush, restaurant gift cards, and more. Candy, decorated cards and dental care items will then be shipped to Operation Gratitude, an organization that sends more than 150 million care packages annually to troops deployed overseas.

Dr. James and Dr. Ryan McCall are a father-son duo at McCall Family Dentistry and have been serving Geneva and the surrounding area since 1977. The staff is dedicated to comprehensive and preventive patient care and education, and the family-owned practice offers a multitude of general, cosmetic, and restorative procedures.
