Boys cross country: Huntley runs away with regional
The Huntley boys cross country team had all five of its scoring runners in the Top 10 Saturday as the Red Raiders ran away with the Class 3A Hononegah regional championship.
Huntley scored 22 points to far outdistance second place Hononegah, which scored 66. Harlem, South Elgin, Rockford East and Rockford Jefferson also qualified as teams for next Saturday's West Aurora sectional.
Senior Keagan Smith led Huntley to the title, winning the race in a time of 15:37. Seth Conroy took second for the Red Raiders while Mike Grocholski was third, Jadon Conroy sixth and Joey Ozzauto 10th.
Leading South Elgin to a sectional berth were Jace Warrick (17th), Hector Rodriguez (18th), Owen Sirridge (19th), Brady Tolva (21st) and Michael Mikhail (23rd).
At Palatine: At the Class 3A Palatine regional, Jacobs qualified as a team by finishing fourth with 106 points. Lake Zurich won the title with 43, while Buffalo Grove, McHenry and Palatine also qualified for next Saturday's Schaumburg sectional. Kyle Ross (9th), Garrett Brenizer (15th), James Hennessy (18th), Zachary Albrecht (25th) and Cole Schwarz (39th) led Jacobs. Qualifying as individuals were Crystal Lake South's Jonathon Pruss (7th) and Ryan Foster (28th), Cary-Grove's Alex Ratkovich (13th) and Dundee-Crown's Logan Hayes (22nd) and Anthony Hurgoi (29th).
At Kaneland: At the Class 2A Kaneland regional, the host Knights came up 1 point short of the regional title. Crystal Lake Central won the team title with 72 points. Vernon Hills, Prairie Ridge, Sycamore and Hampshire also qualified for next Saturday's Woodstock North sectional. Matthew Richtman (5th), Austin Kintz (8th), Sean Spaetzel (14th), Will Kuipers (17th) and Andrew Kantola (29th) led Kaneland. Scoring points for Hampshire were Jacob Oury (7th), Will Matushek (10th), Kyle Blake (23rd), Tommy Croissant (45th) and Sheldon McKittrick (46th). Burlington Central also qualified four individuals - Nick Harvey (15th), Tate Henrikson (18th), Josh Teets (21st) and Zach Lorenz (41st). Prairie Ridge's Filip Pajak won the race.
At Marist: Aurora Central Catholic's Henry Feldhaus qualified as an individual at the Class 2A Marist regional, finishing in 20th place. He will run at next Saturday's Wheaton Academy sectional.
At Winnebago: In Class 1A, Harvest Christian won the Winnebago regional with 56 points, edging Johnsburg by 1 point. Byron, Winnebago, North Boone, Durand and Westminster Christian also qualified as teams for next Saturday's Oregon sectional. Scoring for Harvest were Andrew Dobrescu (4th), Michael Sisko (7th), Mark Davila (11th), Kyler Young (15th) and Riley Steiner (19th). Westminster was led by Tom Danner (13th), Jason Yaccino (18th), Nathan Horesch (43rd), Ben Bertsche (44th) and Sam Hild (58th).
At Aurora Christian: In Class 1A, Aurora Christian's Tanner Chada ran a 15:30 to win the individual title. The Eagles also qualified Kennedy Cross (26th) for next weekend's Lisle sectional. Also qualifying was Elgin Academy's Devin Uner (30th).
