FBI to help investigate fatal police shooting of Florida man
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Federal authorities will help investigate the death of a black man fatally shot by a Florida police officer.
The Palm Beach Sheriff's Office said Friday that it had requested the assistance of the FBI, which agreed to help investigate the death of Corey Jones.
Jones was shot early Sunday in Palm Beach Gardens while waiting for a tow truck in his broken-down vehicle. Police say an undercover officer was checking on what he thought was an abandoned vehicle when he was confronted by an "armed subject."
Jones' family says he was legally in possession of a gun and was likely unaware that the plainclothes officer in an unmarked car was a law enforcement official. Authorities have not released the officer's race.
