Chamber ensemble to perform at Mayslake

A chamber performance at Mayslake Hall will put the spotlight on flute music while helping the homeless.

Chamber ensemble Picosa will feature the music of Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Joseph Schwantner at the concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County's Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 W. 31st St., Oak Brook.

The concert will celebrate flutist Jennie Brown's debut solo album, "Looking Back: Flute Music of Joseph Schwantner," and feature her performances of "Black Anemones" and "Soaring" for flute and piano.

To complement the works, the full ensemble will perform Schwantner's "Taking Charge" for flute, piano and percussion, with guest percussionist Peter Ferry, and "Consortium 1" for full ensemble.

The program also will feature Chicago composer Stacy Garrop's "Little Bits," Dvorak's "Romance" for violin and piano, Pulitzer Prize-winner Caroline Shaw's "In Manas Tuas" for solo cello, and Stravinsky's "L'Histoire du Soldat Suite."

Tickets are $25 for adults, $23 for seniors, $10 for college students and free for high school students and younger. Attendees who bring donations for the nonprofit Hesed House in Aurora will receive a $5 discount. Tickets are available at picosamusic.com.

Picosa strives to build Chicago's profile in the arts by performing well-known pieces alongside works by local composers. It also collaborates with community organizations to support and raise awareness of various causes. This season it's partnering with Hesed House to help end homelessness.

"This is an excellent opportunity for DuPage County residents to experience a fun night of fine music close to home," said Forest Preserve District Commissioner Jeff Redick, District 2.

"Come for the exquisite music, but also enjoy the grandeur of historic Mayslake Hall," Forest District President Joe Cantore said.
