Candidate who admits relationship with student loses support
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - The Vanderburgh County Republican Party has withdrawn its support for an Evansville City Council candidate and retired high school teacher who admitted having a sexual relationship with a student about 40 years ago.
The party took the action Tuesday shortly after Republican Mayor Lloyd Winnecke asked County GOP Chairman Wayne Parke to "take the necessary actions" to end the campaign of Republican at-large candidate Jack Schriber.
Winnecke said Schriber's "actions are inexcusable."
Schriber told the Evansville Courier & Press the relationship occurred when he was an English teacher at Central High School in the mid-1970s. He said the student was 17 or 18 at the time.
However, the victim told Evansville police he was between 15 and 17 when he was "coerced" into a nonconsensual relationship with Schriber.
