Girls volleyball: Hersey delivers 3 Pumpkin wins
Mid-Suburban East girls volleyball champion Hersey tuned up for Thursday's 7 p.m. conference championship match at Palatine by going 3-2 in the Maine West Pumpkin Invite held this weekend.
Libertyville (28-5) won the title with a 20-25, 25-18, 25-21 victory over Lyons in championship match on Saturday held at Wheeling High School (an interim host site as Maine West undergoes a renovation).
The Huskies defeated Oak Forest, Resurrection and Queen of Peace in two sets before dropping a two-set match to Lyons and three-set decision to Belleville West to finish seventh.
Fuerst led with 6 aces while Gianna Carusiello had 4 and Frankiewicz 3.
Liz Fuerst (51 kills), Zoe Strozewski (25), Amy Morgan (21) and Katie Rozanski (20) led the Huskies' attack set by Emma Strozewski (51 assists) and Maggie Reisel (48) assists
Emma Frankiewicz led the back row with 71 digs. Fuerst led with 6 aces while Gianna Carusiello had 4 and Frankiewicz 3.
Palatine went 3-2 in the tournament to place sixth while Conant (5-22) was 1-4.
Autumnfest: Fremd defeated Wauconda 27-25, 22-25, 21-19 in the championship match.
The Vikings (21-8), who have won 14 of their last 17 matches, also earned a three-set triumph in the semifinals where they topped Mundelein 14-25, 25-16, 15-10.
After going 1-1 on Friday night, Barrington came back and was 2-1 on Saturday with wins over West Chicago and Crystal Lake South to take 11th place out of 24 teams at the Glenbard East tourney.
Ana Zawisza (54 assists), Gabby Morris (18 kills), Andi Capel (15 kills), Megan Talbot (9 kills) and Olivia Hagan (19 digs) were leaders on Friday while top attackers on Saturday were Morris (22 kills), Capel (14 kills) and Talbot (13).
Zawisza handed out 55 assists while Hagan had 32 digs.
Schaumburg (18-5) went 1-4 in the invite as Abbie Rahn (41 kills), Mallory Gerber (31 kills), Lexi Ross (19), Morgan Sterrett (14) and Julia Spitelli (9) led the attack.
Ross had 11 blocks and Rahn 8 while Lauren Lavigne collected 43 digs.
Elgin Invite: Leyden (22-11) went 4-1 and took second place in the six-team invite as senior outside hitter Emily Steininger (25 kills), junior setter Autumn McGee (27 kills, 20 aces, 66 assists) and junior outside hitter Patrycja Strzeminska (19 kills) helped lead the way.
