Ex-Illinois police chief faces new theft charges in Iowa

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) - A former Scales Mound, Illinois, police chief convicted of theft earlier this month faces additional theft charges in eastern Iowa.

The Telegraph Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1PyAhJi ) that 44-year-old Brian Hartlep, of Galena, Illinois, has been charged with second-degree theft. Hartlep's arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 26 at the Dubuque County Courthouse.

Earlier this month, Hartlep was found guilty in Illinois of buying a $1,100 wall furnace without permission while serving as maintenance manager for Apple Canyon Lake Property Owners Association, then selling it to an apartment complex.

His sentencing in that case is scheduled for Nov. 20.

Iowa court documents say Hartlep used association money in 2012 to buy more than $2,000 in roofing shingles from an Iowa company that were installed on a home owned by his brother.
