Budget panel OKs state funds for Evansville medical school

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A medical school campus in downtown Evansville won final approval from the State Budget Committee.

The budget panel on Friday approved releasing $25.2 million in state funding for the Academic Health Science and Research Center in downtown Evansville to be operated by the Indiana University School of Medicine, the University of Southern Indiana and the University of Evansville.

The budget panel approved $19.2 million for IU and $6 million for the University of Southern Indiana. The project also is receiving $30 million in local funding.

The funding from the state budget was approved earlier this year.

Construction is expected to start later this fall. Completion is tentatively set for December 2017.
