Neuqua Valley's Walker leads boys state tournament

Neuqua Valley's Nick Walker finished the first day of the two-day boys state golf tournament in first place in Class 3A in Bloomington.

Walker shot a 72, 1 stroke better than Hinsdale Central's Brendan O'Reilly.

The three-time defending champion Red Devils lead the team standings with a 304, with Neuqua Valley second at 311.

In Class 2A St. Francis is in third place with a 320 led by Jonathan Nocek, who is tied for third individually at 73.

In Decatur, Neuqua Valley senior Jessica Yuen and Benet freshman Lauren Beaudreau are tied for fourth place at 73, 2 strokes behind the Class AA leaders.

Hinsdale Central leads the team standings with a 307. Wheaton Warrenville South is third at 316, and Downers Grove North is 10th at 353.

In Class A, IC Catholic Prep's Maddie Hurt is tied for fourth with a 79, 5 strokes out of first place.

The tournaments resume Saturday with another 18 holes.
