Boys soccer: Ramirez breaks Round Lake career scoring record

Freddie Ramirez set a school scoring record with a pair of goals for Round Lake's boys soccer team on Thursday.

Ramirez finished the game with 2 goals and an assist, giving him 87 goals in his standout four-year prep career. He passes up the mark established by Mauricio Salgado, who reached 86 career goals a few years back.

Ramirez's efforts led Round Lake past host Highland Park 3-2 in a nonconference game.

"It's pretty amazing and I couldn't have done it without the team," said Ramirez who has 24 goals this season. "I never thought I could see myself here. These guys bring me up, and bring me down. This is huge, the biggest thing in my career. I remember Mauricio breaking the record in my freshman year."

Erick Alvarez also had a goal and an assist for the Panthers.

Round Lake (16-3) will open up the Class 3A Stevenson sectional on Tuesday. The Panthers will meet Stevenson in a Highland Park regional semifinal.

"I wanted the guys to get used to the field, because this is where we're going to be playing for our next two games, hopefully," Round Lake coach Hugo Tellez said. "They get the feel and the aura, the atmosphere of what we might expect."

Highland Park (4-10-5) fell behind 3-0 but got goals in the final 20 minutes from Tommy Quirk and Luis Solano.
