Workers at Mitsubishi plant in Normal vote on contract

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - Hundreds of workers at the Mitsubishi plant in Normal are voting Wednesday on a tentative contract with Mitsubishi Motors North America.

The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports (http://bit.ly/1NaoHle ) the 950 members of United Auto Workers Local 2488 will vote over a 24-hour period. Details of the agreement were explained to union members at a meeting Monday.

The contract expired in August. As negotiations on a new contract were about to start, the company announced plans to cease production at the plant at the end of November, lay off staff and close the facility in May.

About 1,200 people work at the plant.

Union President Rod DeVary says a new contract is necessary even with the looming closure because employees still have certain rights.

Results of the vote will be announced Thursday.
