History-filled Indiana county finally getting history museum

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A southern Indiana county with a long history that's tied to the exploration of the American West is getting a county museum in time for Indiana's bicentennial.

The Clark County Museum is now under construction in Jeffersonville after being accepted as one of Indiana's Bicentennial Legacy projects.

Local Legacy Project supervisor Jeanne Burke tells the News and Tribune (http://bit.ly/1VHHGLx ) the Ohio River county has never had a county history museum. Phase one of the project should be complete by September 2016, when Indiana's bicentennial torch passes through Clark County.

The famed Lewis and Clark expedition that explored vast tracts of the West departed from the Clark County town of Clarksville in 1803.

That community just north of Louisville, Kentucky, calls itself the oldest American town in the old Northwest Territory.
