Celebrate Native American Day Oct. 17 with Elgin Public Museum

Come to Lords Park for the annual celebration of Native American culture hosted by the Elgin Public Museum on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Renowned musician Bill "Conquering Bear" Buchholtz will play the native flute from spirit; take advantage of his knowledge of the history, healing power and communicative role the flute had in many native societies. Enjoy a portrayal of a Potawatomi Indian from the late 18th and early 19th century, as performed by Sal Red Hawk.

Red Hawk, garbed in traditional clothing, will set up a wigwam and demonstrate life in a Potawatomi household. Ken Geir will demonstrate flintkanapping techniques. See the artistry and skill needed to create stone tools like arrows, axes and knives.

One of the most popular events, the Bison Blessing, will be held at noon across from the bison pen.

A Native American elder will bless and thank the bison for all that they have provided.

Native American Cultural Day runs from noon to 4 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Elgin's Lords Park within and just outside the museum building, located at 225 Grand Blvd.
