Addison Trail falls in second OT
In a tough defensive battle Morton defeated Addison Trail 13-7 in double overtime in a West Suburban Gold football game on Friday in Addison.
The Blazers' Mike Hundley ran for 124 yards in 32 carries and 1 touchdown to rival his counterpart. Mustangs running back Greg Hoard ran for 131 in 33 carries.
But the game came down to one play, a 1-foot sneak by quarterback Antonio Tamayo for a touchdown in the second overtime to give the Mustangs the win.
Neither team scored in regulation play.
In the first overtime the Mustangs won the toss and had the ball first. They scored on Tamayo's 1-yard sneak set up by runs of 5 and 4 yards by Hoard. The Blazers countered with Hundley scoring on a 2-yard run to force a second overtime.
The Blazers attempted a field goal on fourth and goal but kick missed, giving the ball back to Mustangs. Hoard ran the ball on two carries to the 1-foot line where Tamayo punched the ball in for the score and the win.
"The game didn't come down to the last fourth-down play when they punched it in from the 1," said Blazers coach Paul Parpet Jr. "It came down to this; we left four drives out in the field on offense and came away with no points. And we didn't make plays when they needed to be made."
The Blazers were plagued by dropped passes and penalties. A holding call on a Hundley touchdown run erased the potential winning touchdown during regulation time.
"It came down to inches," Hundley said. "I think we would have had them if we didn't go into overtime because we were stopping them. They just got lucky in the overtime. Penalties definitely killed us."
The Blazers need to win their remaining games against Proviso East and Glenbard West for a chance to make the IHSA playoffs.
"It was a great high school football game," Parpet said. "Both teams laid it on the line defensively, and it was whoever was standing last is what it came down to. It's a two-game season now."
"What a fun night," added Mustangs coach Bob Organ. "Both teams just fought their tails off. They did a good job shutting our run game down. But when we needed it, we got it. These guys play tough all the time. And to come here and go to overtime and take one here from them, it's huge."
