Ferrer wins Malaysian Open final in straight sets

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - Top-seeded David Ferrer became the first Spaniard to win the Malaysian Open when he defeated countryman Feliciano Lopez 7-5, 7-5 in the final on Sunday.

Ferrer broke his opponent in the last game of both sets to clinch his 25th ATP tour title in just over 90 minutes.

"I feel very happy, because I have never played so well at this tournament," Ferrer said. "I played my best match of the week in this final and my sensations after my elbow injury are now very good."

The 34-year-old Ferrer, playing his 50th tour final, improved his record against Lopez to 9-6.

Ferrer returned from an elbow injury at the U.S. Open, where he lost in the third round against Jeremy Chardy. He dropped just one set in Malaysia, against Benjamin Becker on Saturday.
