Agency: Indiana hunter dies trying to remove tree stand

GREENFIELD, Ind. (AP) - The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says a 59-year-old hunter from central Indiana died after apparently trying to remove a tree stand from a dead, rotting tree.

A Sunday statement says the body of Robert D. Smith was found after multiple agencies responded to calls that the Greenfield man hadn't returned home Saturday night.

Elevated stands are common equipment for hunters to sit on as they wait for deer and other game.

The department says an initial investigation concluded Smith was trying to remove the stand when the tree broke at its base. That apparently caused Smith to fall around 18 feet.

Officials estimate the accident happened at least four hours before Smith's body was discovered. Sunday's statement says no foul play is suspected.
