Fourth in Peoria, Hoffman Estates rolling right along

Hoffman Estates won its second consecutive Mid-Suburban West boys cross country title on Thursday, and the Hawks stayed on their roll Saturday.

In a loaded field that included the top three teams in the Illinois Cross Country Coaches poll, Hoffman ran to an impressive fourth-place finish with 165 points at the Peoria Central Invitational at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

No. 1 Sandburg placed four runners in the top nine to easily secure the title with 27 points. No. 3 Lyons Township took second with 66 points, followed by No. 2 Neuqua Valley (97 points).

Huntley senior Keagan Smith won the individual title in 14:24.06, followed by Lyon's Vince Zona (14:34.6).

Senior Bryan Gamboa (15:07.63), senior Shiv Patel (15:07.92) and junior Jack Worman (15:08.66) packed together, finishing 23-24-26 to power No. 10 Hoffman Estates. Junior Alex Makrounis (15:23.73) added a 39th-place finish for the Hawks.

No. 13 Prospect was coming off a big win against MSL East rival Buffalo Grove on Thursday, and the Knights kept things humming along on Saturday by taking sixth place with 211 points. Senior Matt Cozine (15:17.2) powered the Knights finishing in 31st place, followed by senior Karson LeComte (15:19.46) and junior Sean Sanaghan (15:22), who went 36-38.

Wheeling also made a nice showing with junior Matt Hoffman (15:17.96) and senior Justin Loquercio (15:18.72) taking 33rd and 35th place as the Wildcats finished eighth with 302 points. Senior Elliot Nabatov (15:24.16) was 40th for Wheeling.

Junior John Gerardi (78th place) was the top finisher for Rolling Meadows, which finished in 20th place.

• Buffalo Grove senior Kevin Salvano took first in 15:34 powering Buffalo Grove to a second place finish at the Lockport Invitational.

Whitney Young took first with 73 points, with Neuqua Valley (88 points) took third followed by Downers Grove North (136 points), and Plainfield South (139 points).

Senior Tom Cleary (16:05) finished in seventh place with sophomore Mitchell Guittar (16:22) adding a 14th-place finish.
