Boys golf: Jacobs claims FVC title
Jacobs boys golf coach Gary Conrad left last year's Fox Valley Conference meet with a bitter taste in his mouth after his Golden Eagles finished in second place.
Conrad was in a much better mood Thursday at Prairie Isle Golf Club in Crystal Lake.
Conrad's Golden Eagles claimed the FVC title with a score of 314 with Cary-Grove second at 316.
"We were really disappointed finishing second in the conference last season," said Conrad. "We came into today a little nervous because everybody expected us to win. The conditions weren't easy and our kids battled. We feel ready for the regionals."
Senior Justin Lenzini, who was third as a sophomore and second last season, was the conference's individual medalist with a 73.
"We were really disappointed last season finishing second," said Lenzini. "We as a team wanted to win the team championship. I hit the ball off the tee well and my putting was pretty good, I struggled with my irons and wedges because of the wind. I feel good going into the regionals."
Following Lenzini for the Golden Eagles were Billy Walker (77), Garret Tighe (80) and Riley Coakley (84).
Cary-Grove was paced by Kyle Irlbacker with a 74 and Zach Beaugureau carded a 76. Mitch Whitehouse shot 82 and Keaton May delivered an 84.
"It is a little disappointing that we finished second and only 2 strokes back of a very good Jacobs team but overall we played great," said Cary-Grove coach Chris Gotsch. "Our top two players, Kyle and Zach, have been consistent all season long."
Prairie Ridge, led by an 80 from Ethan Farnum, was third with a score of 328.
Hampshire, paced by an 18-hole total of 80 from Nick Swierczynski, placed fourth with a score of 333.
Swierczynski was backed by Myles Miller (83), Mark Spitzer (85) and Clayton Staszewski (85).
"Nick played tremendous but he thinks he can do better," said Hampshire coach Jeff Howe. "He has been a consistent number one player for us all season. The team feels good that they played well today and we are ready for the regionals."
Grayslake Central, fifth with a score of 334, was paced by a 78 from Mike Murdy.
Led by Top 10 finisher Jake Grabner with a 77, Huntley placed sixth with a score of 340.
Crystal Lake South, led by an 85 from Casey Hunter, was eighth with a 351 while Dundee-Crown was 10th with a score of 356. JP Anderson had a 77 for the Chargers.
