Official: Rumors of potential violence at Dundee-Crown 'unsubstantiated'
Several rumors of potential violence at Dundee-Crown High School have been deemed unsubstantiated, district officials said Thursday.
Anthony McGinn, director of public relations and communication services at Community District 300, said students have been inventing rumors that one particular student made threats to commit an "act of violence" during the high school's homecoming events this week.
District, school and police officials have investigated every rumor that has circulated, McGinn said.
In a note sent to District 300 parents, Superintendent Fred Heid listed each rumor and the actions taken to address it.
"To date, there has been no actual report or evidence to support the numerous allegations being made," he said. "Every investigation has turned up no actual witness to substantiate any of the rumor's claims."
Authorities checked the notebooks and belongings of the student in question, and found no indication of any threats being made, Heid said. Students involved in the rumors were also questioned.
"Sadly, this rumor boils down to simple hysteria perpetuated by social media and gossip," he said.
Heid said additional police officers will be at the school during the homecoming events, including the homecoming game Friday.
