Boys soccer: Cary-Grove upends South Elgin
A 3-goal first half outburst was more than enough for Cary-Grove to get past South Elgin 4-1 in the opening game of the Carmel boys soccer quad on Tuesday afternoon in Mundelein.
Michael Arenberg and Esteban Angeles each scored twice and had assists in leading the Trojans.
The Trojans (5-1-2) scored three times in a 6-minute span during the first 9 minutes.
"We came out and played well," Cary-Grove coach Mark Olson said. "We worked on some things and played well. I thought we left a lot of goals on the field."
Angeles opened the scoring for Cary-Grove in the fourth minute after taking a pass from Arenberg. Then the same combination led to the second goal in the eighth minute when Arenberg netted a goal with the assist from Angeles.
Arenberg made it 3-0 just over a minute later with an unassisted goal.
Angeles scored his second goal early in the second half off an assist from Nathaniel Weber for a 4-0 advantage.
Derek Baker scored the lone goal for South Elgin (0-4, 0-2) in the 58th minute.
"We had a slow start," South Elgin coach Collin Hayes said. "It wasn't one of our best games. (Cary-Grove) has some nice offensive movement off the ball. They are good with their ball pace and communication.
South Elgin will next play Lakes back at Carmel on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Cary-Grove takes on Carmel at 7 p.m. Thursday.
