Metra says yes to small pets on all weekend trains

Metra directors will get a paws up from furry riders after voting Monday to expand a pilot project to allow small pets in carriers on all train lines on weekends.

The change goes into effect Oct. 10 and the pilot program runs through January. After that, the board will reconsider whether to make the pet-friendly ambience permanent.

The railroad started with small dogs and cats in carriers on the Rock Island Line with no reported excessive barking, meowing or growling.

The move came after pet lovers launched a petition with more than 4,000 signatures.

Pets must stay in carriers on owners' laps or on seats.

Animals cannot be disruptive to other passengers because of "noise, odor or aggressive behavior."

Service dogs are allowed at all times.
