Fine Line to offer art classes for teens

A collaboration between St. Charles' acclaimed Fine Line Creative Arts Center and the St. Charles Park District is bringing new art classes to teens, and they're all taught by exceptional artists, Fine Line faculty members Karen Kloubec, Robin Schoenburg and Dorie Blankenship.

Fine Line Creative Arts Center is known for offering an impressive array of art classes for adults, including painting, blacksmithing, ceramics, glass fusing, weaving and much more.

In response to countless requests, Fine Line offers classes for 9- to 14-year-olds this fall, at the park district's Pottawatomie Community Center, and the park district is thrilled to host these classes.

"We love having creative arts classes for our youth," said Jason Khuen, youth programs supervisor.

The three classes being offered through this collaboration may very well introduce teens to these particular art media and techniques for the very first time, but all levels are welcome.

• Felting: 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 13 to Nov. 17. If you like to try new things, this is the felt class for you. Learn how to paint with fibers! Make felt using a variety of needle techniques. Create a vessel, or sculpture. Beautiful surface designs can be created with simple wool fibers and special felting needles. You can create bold graphic patterns or ethereal watercolor effects, depending on your style. Anything is possible. No experience needed.

• Hand-building Ceramics: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 13 to Nov. 17. Create functional (mugs, bowls, boxes, etc.) or sculptural ceramics pieces from coils, slabs and pinching clay through demonstrations and hands-on instructions. You'll also learn to add interest and color to your work through texture, underglaze and glaze. No experience needed.

• Inkle Loom Weaving: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 13-29. Weave a belt, guitar strap, tote bag handle, or simple jewelry. The project and colors are up to you. Set up and weave your band on a simple Inkle loom. They provide the looms. No experience necessary.
