CLC Music department announces fall 2015 concerts

Seven concerts, featuring a huge variety of choral and instrumental music, will be presented by the College of Lake County Music department during fall semester.

The CLC Music department boasts four instrumental groups: the Monday Night Jazz Ensemble, the Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble, the Wind Ensemble and the Concert Band. CLC's choral program includes four ensembles: the Choir of Lake County, the CLC Singers, the Chamber Choir and the Gospel Choir. The ensembles feature musically talented CLC students as well as community members. All concerts are held in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the CLC Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St.

• Jazz Concert: Friday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Big-band jazz classics and contemporary charts skillfully played by musicians from the Monday and Tuesday Night Jazz Ensembles. The Monday Night band will play selections by Bill Holman, Tom Kubis, Bob Mintzer, Frank Mantooth, Rob McConnell and Gene Thorne. Regular admission is $8; admission for CLC staff and students and seniors is $7. Dr. Michael Flack directs the Monday Night Jazz Ensemble and Dave Hibbard directs the Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble.

• Wind Ensemble Concert: Sunday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m. Treat yourself to a concert of varied selections played by CLC students and community members, directed by Dr. Michael Flack. Selections from the 20th and 21st century composers include works by Frank Ticheli, Charles Ives, Johan de Meij, John Mackey, John Philip Sousa, Philip Sparke and Vincent Persichetti plus highlights from "Beauty and the Beast." Regular admission is $8; admission for CLC staff and students and seniors is $7.

• Choral Concert: Sunday, Oct. 25 at 4 p.m. Enjoy a delightfully diverse afternoon of choral music performed by the CLC Singers, Chamber Singers, Choir of Lake County and Gospel Choir. The choral directors are Jeffrey DeLay (CLC Singers and Choir of Lake County), Ingrid Mikolajczyk (Chamber Singers) and Charles Thomas Hayes (Gospel Choir). The CLC Singers will present excerpts from Vivaldi's "Gloria" and the Choir of Lake County will perform works by Randall Thompson and Mozart plus a 1940s medley. Regular admission is $6; admission for CLC staff and students and seniors is $5.

• Jazz Concert with Guest Artist John Von Ohlen: Sunday, Nov. 22 at 4 p.m. Legendary drummer John Von Ohlen, who has performed and recorded with orchestras led by Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Ralph Marterie and Billy Maxted, will solo with the Monday Night Jazz Ensemble. Von Ohlen led his own quartet and has toured with Urbie Green, Holiday on Ice, Tony Bennett, Perry Como, Rosemary Clooney and many others. The Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble will also perform. Regular admission is $10; admission for CLC staff and students and seniors is $9.

• Holiday Choral Concert: Saturday, Dec. 12 at 4 p.m. CLC's four choirs (the CLC Singers, Chamber Singers, Choir of Lake County and Gospel Choir) will present a concert of holiday songs that range from the classics to contemporary favorites. Regular admission is $6; admission for CLC staff and students and seniors is $5.

• Holiday Wind Ensemble Concert: Sunday, Dec, 13 at 4 p.m. Celebrate the sounds of the season with festive holiday music of many styles, directed by Dr. Michael Flack. Regular admission is $8; admission for CLC staff and students and seniors is $7.

• Concert Band Concert: Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m. John Mose and the 60-member Concert Band will perform a wide range of beautiful band music plus holiday favorites. Regular admission is $8; admission for CLC staff and students and seniors is $7.

General admission (not reserved seating) ticket prices include a $2 James Lumber Center facility fee. The Box Office is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 60 minutes prior to each performance. To avoid long lines at the Box Office caused by last-minute sales, please purchase your tickets in advance or arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the performance.

Community members are invited to participate in CLC Music department ensembles or to take private lessons for college credit or personal enrichment. The CLC Music Department offers 59 courses leading to two different degrees: Associate in Music or Associate in Fine Arts in music.
