Coverage reminds us of police dedication

Last week following the shooting of the Fox Lake police officer, Burt Constable wrote an outstanding article about how the tragedy was being used on social media as a reason to point fingers or rush to judgment.

Some, he stated, rushed right into the race argument, believing this might be another case of white-vs.-black violence. Others said that police officers in general have actions like this set in fate for them already.

Much of this came, as Constable noted, before any real facts were reported.

America faces a serious problem today, and it's not violent cops. The problem is abuse of police.

Most of the time, police have a very good reason to take the actions they do. From a young age, most of us are hopefully taught to respect those in authority. Sadly, many people today do not, and this includes disrespect or not cooperating with law enforcement.

The ironic thing is, many of these people who so vocally disapprove of police officers will still call the police when they need help.

Police don't do this job because of the money they make. They do not make a lot. They do it because they want to help the community.

Hats off to the Daily Herald's coverage of the shooting, which showed that police officers are just as human as the rest of us.
