Ashes probable cause of Batavia garage fire
Nobody was injured in a garage fire that occurred Sunday in Batavia, officials said.
Shortly before 2 p.m., firefighters arrived at a house in the 800 block of Morris Court to find smoke coming from a closed garage door that had smoke damage, according to a news release from the Batavia Fire Department.
Fire crews entered the home, removed the garage doors and were able to extinguish the fire, officials said.
The fire was determined to be an accident, officials said, likely caused from a bucket in the garage containing ashes from an outdoor fire pit.
The home's occupant was alerted of the fire by his dog, authorities said. The occupant went outside, saw the fire and called the fire department, officials said.
Fire officials said residents should douse ashes with water before putting them in a fire-safe container and keep them away from anything flammable.
