Coffee Talk to examine the politics of creating memorials
The Des Plaines History Center invites the public to its Coffee Talk, "The Political Process of Creating Memorials," from 7-8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, at the History Center, 781 Pearson St. A $3 donation is suggested.
Jenelle Davis, Ph.D. student in art history at the University of Illinois, will talk about the tensions that arise between governments and the public over constructing memorials to events, such as the Holocaust, the totalitarian regimes in Czechoslovakia and Hungary, and the Bosnian War. Davis recently spent some time in Eastern Europe conducting research for her dissertation about this complex process.
